Net metering policies in Massachusetts can help solar panel owners save money and reduce their carbon footprint. When your solar panels generate more electricity than you use, you can send the excess back to the grid and receive credit on your next bill. Just something to keep in mind when considering solar panels.

On November 25, 1997, a law restructuring Massachusetts’ electricity utility industry became effective. Technological advances in gas turbine generation combined with the high electricity rates in the state led to this legislation. The New England Electric System (NEES) was another major player that led to the deregulation of Massachusetts’ electricity market as it had drafted legislation for Rhode Island a couple of years before. In 2005, the state deregulated both electric and gas with Energy Switch Massachusetts.
As of March 2019, 58% of the state’s residents made the switch from utility electric supply to competitive supply, and almost 80% of the entire state (including residential and commercial customers) have taken advantage of the utility options.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), by March 2018, Massachusetts had installed 1,867 megawatts of solar photovoltaic capacity, exceeding the state's solar goal of at least 1,600 megawatts of solar capacity by 2020.
In the latest report released in 2010, the primary renewable energy capacity source was hydro conventional, and the primary renewable energy generation source was municipal solid waste/landfill gas.
On January 28, 2019, the State House unveiled the 100% Renewable Energy Act committing to power Massachusetts’ electricity, heating, and transportation needs with renewable energy by 2045.
A lot of WattBuy’s suppliers use renewable energy sources to generate their energy. You can check if any renewable energy sources are available in your area by inputting your zip code at the top of this page!
