Types of Electricity Plans in Texas

Fixed-Term Plan

Fixed-term plans provide price protection for the duration of the contract. While this is not the same as a fixed rate and your rate could vary with your usage in accordance with the Electricity Facts Label, your rate typically won’t change for at least three billing cycles or the term of the contract.

Variable-Term Plan

With variable-term plans, the rate you pay fluctuates with the market and you’re charged a different amount from month to month. The benefit to this type of plan is they often lack contracts, and if the market price goes down, so will your bill.

Renewable Plans

Renewable energy plans are a cleaner option to help you reduce your carbon footprint. Most renewable energy providers have fixed-term plans available, so you can put your wallet and the planet at ease.

Pre-Paid Plans

With prepaid electricity plans, you pay in advance for electricity. Prepaid plans skip credit requirements and deposits because you pay upfront. In addition to not requiring deposits, prepaid plans usually have no contract and no termination fee.

Electricity Providers in Texas

There are a variety of electricity plans available to residents of Texas. The following companies provide electricity plans in the state:

deregulatedImg

The Deregulation of Texas’ Power Grid

In January of 2002, Texas officially became a deregulated energy marketplace, allowing most residents the power to choose their own electricity provider. (Those who still have regulated power include those who are served either by a utility cooperative or a utility that’s owned by a municipality.)

Deregulation introduced market competition by providing more energy options for consumers. This subsequently drove electricity rates down, because now, the transmission and distribution is handled by the utility, while the Retail Electricity Providers (REPs) manage the sale of electricity to consumers.

Renewable Power in Texas

In 2006, Texas surpassed California in wind-power production, becoming the top wind-producing state in the US. The state set renewable energy goals in 1999 and again in 2005, which it has since far surpassed. Texas produced one-fourth of all the US wind-powered electricity in 2017, and today, Texas generates more renewable wind power than most countries.

Many cities in Texas benefit from renewable energy sources. In fact, Georgetown, TX, with a population of 50,000, powers itself entirely with renewable energy.

A lot of WattBuy’s suppliers use renewable energy sources to generate their energy. You can check if any renewable energy sources are available in your area by inputting your zip code at the top of this page!
