Ohio’s Electricity at a Glance

Most of Ohio’s electricity comes from nuclear, coal, or natural gas sources while renewable resources like hydropower, wind, solar, geothermal, or biomass energy provide a fraction. Even so, Ohio offers many different electricity options such as fixed-term, variable-term, and fully renewable plans.

PUCO oversees how electricity rates are set in the state—with the average residential rate being 12.63 ¢/kWh. In cities and towns, you can either choose a competitive rate from a retail supplier or pay the “Standard Service Offer” from the utility company that distributes your electricity.

In rural areas, non-profit electric cooperatives provide electricity to their members, taking on many, if not all of the related costs. These cooperatives are not regulated by PUCO.

Types Of Electricity Plans in Ohio

Fixed-Term Plan

Fixed-term plans provide price protection for the duration of the contract. While this is not the same as a fixed rate and your rate could vary with your usage in accordance with the Electricity Facts Label, your rate typically won’t change for at least three billing cycles or the term of the contract.

Variable-Term Plan

With variable-term plans, the rate you pay fluctuates with the market and you’re charged a different amount from month to month. The benefit to this type of plan is they often lack contracts, and if the market price goes down, so will your bill.

Renewable Plans

Renewable energy plans are a cleaner option to help you reduce your carbon footprint. Most renewable energy providers have fixed-term plans available, so you can put your wallet and the planet at ease.

Help for Low Income Residents in Ohio

Help for Low Income Residents in Ohio

Known as “PIPP Plus”, the Percentage of Income Payment Plan makes electric and gas service more affordable for residents at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty line. Instead of charging the actual cost of electricity, it charges no more than ten percent of a household’s monthly income —without adding on a security deposit or late fees. It does require a minimum monthly payment of $10.
