New Hampshire’s deregulation journey began in 1996 with the passing of RSA 374-F, which called for the New Hampshire Public Utilities Commission to restructure the state’s utilities, allowing residents to choose their own electricity providers by 1998.
In the next coming years, all electricity companies in New Hampshire restructured and the entire state began offering electric choice by 2003. The intended effect of this restructuring was to use a competitive market to help drive down the cost of energy.
Only 5% of New Hampshire residents had taken advantage of switching to an alternate electricity provider by 2012, so many electricity providers have focused on marketing to larger businesses and the commercial sector. However, experts and analysts expect tens of thousands of consumers and businesses to switch to alternate providers in the coming years.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), in 2016 and 2017, New Hampshire obtained more of its electricity generation from wind power than coal-fired power plants for the first time. In 2018, the state saw 21% of its electricity generation come from renewable resources-- mainly hydroelectric power and biomass. In April 2019, the New Hampshire House backed a plan to get the state using 60 percent renewable energy by 2040.
